Wrought Iron Rails…How Do They Compare?
When choosing railing for your home, you need to consider durability, cost, maintenance and the look you're trying to achieve. Since iron and aluminum are both metals, in most cases either one can be used successfully. Today, however, more homeowners choose wrought iron rails than any other type, to complement their homes.
Following are some of the options homeowners have to consider.
Metal: Railing made of iron or aluminum is referred to as metal railing. These metals have some similar characteristics which are listed below.
They are available in small, lightweight sections that can be adapted to many needs.
They do not rot or splinter the way wood railing can.
When metal railing is properly sealed and coated with powder-coated paint, it can be expected to last more than 20 years.
They both are easily manipulated to create a custom design without a lot of expense.
Metal railings can be cast or tubing material, giving you the option to select preformed railing or request unique one-of-a-kind designs to fit your own style.
Iron: The most common iron used on porch rails is wrought iron rail, which is slightly more expensive than other options, but affordable nonetheless.
Wrought iron is very strong and durable and is often paired with wood to create a warm, rich look.
Homeowners should conduct a yearly inspection of an iron rail to look for flaws or deterioration in the powder coating, which is applied to resist the elements of nature. The first signs of deterioration should be repaired in order to insure long enjoyment of your investment. While rust will flake off iron, its chemical compound will continue to corrode.
Aluminum: Aluminum is the most abundant metal on earth and is processed with electricity.
Today, it is the most economical, but not the most durable alternative for rails. There are many selections of standard designs along with unlimited possibilities of custom design. It is durable, weather resistant and very low-maintenance. Aluminum has a protective oxide coating and is made to resist corrosion. It is available in many colors without a need to paint after installation. Color retention without maintenance is a unique characteristic of aluminum.
Your decision to use iron or metal for your porch railing is personal. Both metals will be able to provide the same aesthetic look and a variety of colors are available for both metals. Quality aluminum generally, will cost slightly less than quality iron, but wrought iron rails tend to be more durable and impact resistant than aluminum.
Wrought iron rails have stood the test of time and are the perfect installation to take advantage of wrought iron's personality. Whether you want a railing for your deck, stairs, balcony, patio, or pool, a railing often needs to be customized for the dimensions of the specific area.
Wrought iron rails will add beauty and functionality for the interior or exterior of any home. Sturdy and elegant, they are the perfect accent for any number of living spaces and decorating styles.
