Oak Finish
trying to get this old finish off my oak table, its rather sticky and it gums up sandpaper something awful.?
anyone have any ideas? i have tried several household cleaners and they have softened up the finish a little but i have just been scraping it off =( will paint thinner work or is there something else i can do?
where can i find paint and varnish remover?
Many times you have to experiment with solvents if you don't know what the finish is, or sometimes use different solvents if one layer of finish was oil based and another was latex. If it is really old it might be shellac, in which case you could try denatured alcohol, which will soften it, and then use a scraper. It most definitely would gum up sandpaper, so don't even think about it. You could use the alcohol with steel wool (not the soaped kind for dishes but the kind for wood finishing work) to loosen the finish and then wipe it up with paper towels or disposable rags. If you do this, be sure to put the saturated rags or paper towels outside...there is a risk from spontaneous combustion, not to mention being overcome by vapors. Use good ventilation. Wear rubber gloves unless you want to have stuff under your fingernails for a week.
