What do stripes on the sleeve mean?
I have been looking at some pictures of the US Marine Corps uniforms and I have noticed that on some uniforms they are one or more gold stripes on the lower part of the arm, below the elbow. What do these mean and why do some men and ranks have more than other men and ranks?

"Red stripes means the sailor got into trouble with the law once or more."
Just one or two red stripes are always worn if time in service is meet and as such does not mean someone got into trouble.
At twelve years of good conduct service then and only then are the service stripes displayed in gold
